Why Do We Keep Giving Away Our Power?

Listen First. Decide Later.
I recently had a conversation with someone who shared a strong opinion about a public figure. When I asked if they had ever listened to a full interview or podcast with that person, they shook their head. “No, and who has time for that?”
That answer stayed with me.
We do have time. How about while driving, cleaning, commuting, etc.? And yet we often choose quick clips and a favorite commentator instead of the full story. And when we rely on someone else’s take, even someone we like or agree with, we quietly hand over our power. We risk being manipulated without even realizing it.
My mother used to tell me, “Before you form an opinion, learn all the facts yourself.”

Frankly, as a kid I found it tedious. Plus back then it meant hours in a library with microfilm and dusty tapes. But she was right. Today the same discovery is a few taps away.
Knowledge isn’t just power; it’s independence.
So why do we continue to avoid nuance and context? Especially when we know humans are complex creatures, with experiences as unique as the patterns of snowflakes? Why have we tossed aside the experience of listening with an open mind and a clean slate?
Listen first. Decide later.
Even if you ultimately disagree with most of what someone says, you’ll almost always learn something valuable. And, possibly even something you might even agree with.
